Case Study

In September 2024 a manufacturer for automotive accessories reached out for an audit. They sell a handful of well-known electronic devices and have one major competitor in the space. Historically they relied on vendors and third-party retailers to distribute their product. When I first viewed their campaigns, a Performance Max for shopping and a Search campaign, their ROAS was around 400% and cost-per-conversion $50.

By themselves these are not horrible numbers to start with. I have audited much worse in fact. The company wanted to scale their ad spend though, and the KPIs needed to look much better to justify Google as the appropriate sales channel.

That PPC Guy audited the account and determined the online sales were all coming from branded searches. using their Google Analytics account we also determined this might be cannibalizing organic traffic. We earned the business and biult a road map to get the account to 3-4% Conversion rate.  

How we did it: Removed branded keywords, expanded negative keyword list (including competitor names) , re-built Pmax asset groups using seperate themes with narrow groups of search themes, built custom audience segments using first party data and filtered merchant center feed to exclude products under $100. 

Results: Starting in October we gradually started to earn a higher conversion rate and ROAS. After 40 sales we switched from a Maximize Click strategy to Maximize Conversions. We made weekly changes to ad copy, the merchant center feed and negative keyword list. By the end of December the campaigns were running at a 3.5% conversion rate and 2,700% ROAS (chart above is the average for Sept – Dec). 

These results earned the business the best online sales results in the history of the company in November and December of 2024. 🔥
